The minutes from the PhD forum on 25 September 2019 were approved.

News from the study administration:

Two new PhDs since our last meeting:

• Maja Karoline Hatlebakk (AB) – 20 November

• Erkka Petteri Heino (AGF) – 18 December

Planned PhD defences in spring 2020:

• Aleksandra Anna Smyrak-Sikora (27 February)

• Siiri Wickström (thesis submitted)

• and possibly some more…

Three new PhD candidates since our last meeting:

• Snorre Flo (AB)

• Nina Kristine Eriksen (AGF)

• Anders Dahlin (AG)

The application web for autumn 2020 courses is now open. Remember the application deadline 15 April (15 February for courses arranged in summer).

SH-201 The History of Svalbard will be arranged from next week onwards. The lectures run over two weeks (Monday – Friday) in the afternoons. Recommended for all who wants to learn more about Svalbard and our history. You may also just follow the lectures without signing up for the course.

PHI-401 Research Ethics and Philosophy of Science I

The mandatory PhD-course in research ethics and philosophy of science will be offered at UNIS in the period 15 – 24 April 2020. The course is arranged by NMBU, and is approved by all

universities where UNIS has PhD candidates as a substitute for their corresponding courses. Two lecturers from NMBU will come to UNIS to arrange the course. The participants will be registered

at NMBU for this course period, and should order a grade transcript from them after finishing the course.

• The PhD network group

o Meet for coffee / lunch each Friday at 12:00

o Remember to include the new PhDs in the WhatsApp-group and Facebook group o The letter asking for financial support, sent to the director in May 2019 has still not

been answered. Katie brought the case up in ECom in autumn 2019.

• Norwegian courses

o UNIS will probably arrange a Norwegian course for non-Norwegian staff.

o Another Norwegian language beginners course (A1-A2 level), arranged by Ellen Solbakken ([email protected]) begins on 22 January. This course is once a week for 16 weeks, price NOK 5000.

o There is a free course organized by an UNIS student starting 24 January from 16-17 in Templet. This will happen every Friday at least for the next 4 weeks. More info here: (https://www.facebook.com/events/112725123438217/).

o There is an informal language cafe being organized at the youth club starting 28.

Jan at 18:00. This is for free with complimentary coffee/tea/cake. More info here:

• New ECom representative

Katie has acted as the deputy PhD-representative in ECom (Educational committee) for some time. She now wants to be replaced. Nina Eriksen and Anders Dahlin volunteered for the position. They will find out and report back to Anne regarding this.

Next meeting will be arranged after Easter 2020.
