0-GROUP SAITHE AND ING OFF TWE ATORWGIAN COAST IN APRIL

ABSTRACT

In 1985 investigations were started to try to measure the abundance of 0-group saithe before the main concentrations entered the inshore waters. In 1986-1988 the investigation area was. expanded to also cover the eastern part of the northern North Sea. This report gives some results from the cruise in April-May 1988, In 1987 the results indicated that the end of April was too late to get a good measurement of the 0-group from the North Sea, Tbe cruise indicate, however, that this is too early to start. For the northern stock (north of 62 N) the

chosen time seems to be all right.

INTRODUCTION

One of t h e b i g g e s t problems i n a s s e s s i n g t h e s a i t h e s t o c k s i n t h e North A t l a n t i c i s t h e l a c k of good r e c r u i t m e n t estimates. The 0-group s a i t h e a r e very e a r l y d i s t r i b u t e d i n t h e i n s h o r e w a t e r s and i t i s almost impossible t o measure t h e abundance when t h e f i s h are s o c l o s e t o t h e s h o r e . I n 1985 a c r u i s e was undertaken with t h e aim of measuring t h e abundance of p o s t l a r v a e of t h e Northeast A r c t i c s a i t h e b e f o r e t h e main c o n c e n t r a t i o n s reached t h e s h o r e (Nedreaas 1986). I n 1986 and 1987 t h e i n v e s t i g a t i o n was expanded t o a l s o cover t h e North Sea (Nedreaas and Smedstad

1987).

To what e x t e n t i t i s p o s s i b l e t o t e l l whether t h e index of abundance w i l l show t h e r i g h t p i c t u r e of t h e y e a r c l a s s s t r e n g t h , a t i m e s e r i e s of such i n d i c e s i s needed. Then i t w i l l be p o s s i b l e t o compare t h e index with t h e number of s a i t h e of t h a t y e a r c l a s s e n t e r i n g t h e f i s h e r y 2-3 y e a r s l a t e r . This r e p o r t g i v e s some r e s u l t s from t h e i n v e s t i g a t i o n i n

1988.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

I n 1988 t h e i n v e s t i g a t i o n was c a r r i e d o u t with R / V " E l d j a m " i n t h e p e r i o d s 5-17 A p r i l i n t h e North Sea ( t r a w l s t a t i o n s no.

and 30 April-24 May f u r t h e r n o r t h .

A 16 X 16 fathoms mid-water c a p e l i n t r a w l with a

The d i s t r i b u t i o n of 0-group s a i t h e i s shown i n Fig.6. The d i s t r i b u t i o n a r e a seems t o be w e l l covered. However, s o u t h of S t a d t h e i n v e s t i g a t i o n s s t a r t e d t o o e a r l y , only

specimens of 0-group s a i t h e were caught. The number of 0-group s a i t h e caught i n

1988

n o r t h of 6 2 ' ~ . was only

58%

of t h e number caught i n 1987, and t h e s a i t h e were a l s o more s p r e a d o u t i n t h e Norwegian Sea.

The t a b l e above shows t h a t a r e d u c t i o n of about 40% has occurred every y e a r s i n c e t h e i n v e s t i g a t i o n s s t a r t e d i n

1985.

Table 1 shows l e n g t h d i s t r i b u t i o n s of 0-group s a i t h e from d i f f e r e n t a r e a s from s o u t h t o n o r t h . These d i s t r i b u t i o n s g i v e information about how c u r r e n t t r a n s p o r t and/or m i g r a t i o n t a k e p l a c e . The l e n g t h d i s t r i b u t i o n s show an i n c r e a s e i n t h e mean l e n g t h northwards. This p o i n t s t o t h e f a c t t h a t very l i t t l e 0-group s a i t h e from a r e a s n o r t h of More have c o n t r i b u t e d t o t h e t o t a l .

The h o r i z o n t a l d i s t r i b u t i o n of h e r r i n g l a r v a e i s shown i n Fig.7.

The h e r r i n g l a r v a e had n o t y e t metamorphosed. There a r e two c l e a r l y s e p a r a t e d a r e a s of d i s t r i b u t i o n , one from S t a d ( 6 2 ' ~ ) and southwards and one from Ha1 tenbanken (65'

N)

and northwards. Table 2 shows a c l e a r d i f f e r e n c e i n t h e l e n g t h d i s t r i b u t i o n of h e r r i n g l a r v a e from t h e s e a r e a s .

T h i s y e a r w e caught 4213 h e r r i n g l a r v a e s o u t h of N 62'20' compared t o 1261 i n

1987.

North of N 62'20' w e caught 517 specimens t h i s y e a r compared t o 1127 i n 1987. We doubt and w e have no b a s i s f o r t e l l i n g whether t h e s e numbers and f l u c t u a t i o n s i l l u s t r a t e s r e a l y e a r c l a s s v a r i a t i o n s of t h e h e r r i n g s t o c k s , I n o t h e r h e r r i n g i n v e s t i g a t i o n s t h e 1988 y e a r c l a s s h a s t u r n e d o u t t o be much r i c h e r than t h e previous two ones. The mean l e n g t h of t h e l a r v a e i s i n both a r e a s s i m i l a r t o t h e 1987 r e s u l t s ,

S c a t t e r e d c a t c h e s of c a t f i s h p o s t l a r v a e were done a l l over t h e surveyed a r e a a s u s u a l ( F i g , 8 ) . North of 6 2 ' ~ t h e t o t a l c a t c h e s i n 1985, 1986, 1987 and 1988 were 256, 297,

and 218, r e s p e c t i v e l y , i n d i c a t i n g a very s t a b l e s i t u a t i o n . South of 6 2 ' ~ t h e c a t c h e s i n 1986,

Larvae of Chirolophis a s c a n i i and Lumpenus s p . which were common i n t h e catches n o r t h of 6 2 ' ~ both i n

and 1986, were only o c c a s i o n a l l y caught i n
