É difícil a obtenção de um quadro real de freqüências quando os indivíduos avaliados são submetidos a uma bateria não padronizada de testes e que é também variável de
um estudo para outro. Em todos os estudos aqui avaliados houve a utilização do mini-exame do estado mental, associado ou não a outros testes. A associação de testes tende a melhorar a precisão dos achados, mas também pode haver diferenças na coleta dos dados pretendidos em função do tipo e preparo dos avaliadores.
11. Conclusão
Nesta revisão sistemática foram encontrados quatro estudos brasileiros considerados “de qualidade”. Eles apresentam metodologia heterogênea, com utilização de testes neuropsicológicos que diferem tanto nos tipos quanto na quantidade de testes por estudo.
Em virtude da grande diferença entre os valores encontrados nos estudos da amostra final podemos dizer que não é possível concluir qual a prevalência de demência entre os idosos brasileiros.
Devido à importância de se conhecer a freqüência da demência na população para permitir o planejamento de serviços de diagnóstico, tratamento e acompanhamento, é necessário que se adote uma padronização metodológica apropriada nos estudos clínico- epidemiológicos. Apesar das limitações apontadas, os dados disponíveis permitem a elaboração desses planejamentos, fazendo-se necessário que se busquem medidas adequadas rapidamente. A prevalência de demência nos mais idosos e nos de baixo nível sócio- econômico tende a aumentar ainda mais devido ao acelerado envelhecimento de uma população que detém um contingente de pobres em níveis preocupantes.
