While 2018 is likely to be an important year for AR, subsequent years will be equally important. One major genre is likely to be games, which are the largest category of apps available.
AI and smartphones
As the range of travel options (such as walking and public transport, in addition to driving) on a smartphone's map app expands, this feature is likely to be used and relied upon even more. Workers whose jobs require a lot of walking or don't require them to be tied to a desk – from retail sales staff to traffic officers – would be saddled with a laptop or tablet and probably wouldn't need a full keyboard or PC processing power.
The evolution of the smartphone camera
The bottom line
Meanwhile, 45 percent of adults and 58 percent of 18-24-year-olds said they think they use their phones too much, and of that, 42 percent of adults and 47 percent of 18-24-year-olds actively try to limit their phones. use. Deloitte Global predicts that by the end of 2018, more than 25 percent of all chips used to accelerate machine learning in the data center will be FPGAs (field programmable gate arrays) and ASICs (application specific integrated circuits).
Artificial neural networks, machine learning and the associated hardware
What follows is an overview of the different types of chips likely to be used for ML in data centers and even beyond. A major cloud provider, Microsoft, has said it uses FPGA chips for inference purposes as part of its hosted ML offerings, publicly disclosing that "hundreds of thousands" of chips were already in use as of summer 2017.73 Amazon Web Services (AWS ) and Baidu are also said to be using FPGAs in their data centers for machine learning purposes,74 though chip volumes are unknown. The figure will almost certainly be higher, but how much exactly is hard to predict.
One example of an ASIC designed for machine learning is the Tensor Processing Unit (TPU - see below), and others, such as Intel's Nervana chip, are expected to be available by early 2018.75 Fujitsu also plans to introducing a chip called Deep Learning Unit (DLU) which will be available in 2018.76 Unit volumes are difficult to predict; they can be in the tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands. For power-constrained applications such as the large server farms where companies do most of their computing, this is likely to be important. When looking at Internet of Things applications that are mobile or not connected to the power grid, power requirements should be measured in milliwatts at most.
For applications such as sensor networks, power consumption should probably be below 10 milliwatts. Acquiring and labeling data for use in training can be very time-consuming and expensive.
Definitions and explanations – a layperson’s guide
The largest trade shows and conferences are likely to gather hundreds of thousands of attendees in the same venue. In the first part of 2017, the Chinese box office represented almost exactly half of the receipts for the top seven movies.157. Supply side: Steady growth in the number of companies offering online media subscriptions, and fragmentation of content libraries.
In the US market, a sports enthusiast can subscribe to OTT services for any of the major sports (football, hockey, baseball, and basketball). The growth in online subscriptions is likely driven by a greater emphasis on multiplayer online games rather than individual games. In fact, 50 percent of 25 to 34 year olds in the US said they used a computer ad blocker.
Deloitte Global predicts traditional TV viewing (see below for definition) among 18 to 24 year olds will decline by 5 to 15 percent per year in the US, Canada and the UK in both 2018 and 2019. For the rest of 2017, it seems likely. that we will see stronger ratings in the US and UK. Young people in the US still watch more than 100 minutes of traditional TV per day as of 2017.
Reality shows were also popular, with three of the top 20 from this category, although none were in the top 10.
Details on interpreting the chart
Similarly, although Figure 21 shows relatively steady, mostly single-digit, annual declines in the US, UK and Canada in recent years, data from other countries tells a different story. And although the drop in viewership in 2016 was in double digits in Sweden, Denmark and Norway, the Finnish 15-24-year-olds saw a slowing decline in the same year of only 3 percent. Deloitte Global predicts that 20 percent of North Americans with Internet access will get all of their home data access via cellular networks (mobile only) by 2018.
Deloitte Global further predicts significant variation in the proportion of the population that uses only cellular for data access by country and by region (see Figure 24). According to our research, less than a tenth of people in France and the UK were mobile only, but in Turkey the figure was more than three times higher. In Latin America, for example, Deloitte Brazil believes that more than a third of all homes in Brazil were mobile data only.
And in China, a fifth of the online user base (rather than households) was mobile-only as of 2016.261 In Tokyo, where fiber optic connections are widely available, hundreds of thousands of homes (or about five percent) rely on mobile only in 2017.262 In Latin America, for example, Deloitte Brazil believes that more than a third of all homes in Brazil were mobile data only.
In each country surveyed, housing in the lowest income class was more likely to be mobile-only than housing in the highest income class (the groups differ from country to country). As Figure 26 shows, the income effect was lowest in the US, where those earning less than $25,000 a year were only a third more likely to be mobile-only than those earning $75,000 and above. Deloitte Global predicts that in 2018 there will be a higher share of mobile-only homes among lower-income households, although it should be noted that in some of the countries surveyed, 13 to 23 percent of higher-income individuals are also mobile-only ; wireless data only isn't just for those who can't afford wired service.
In fact, the biggest demographic factor in whether someone will be mobile alone is age. As can be seen in Figure 27, the youngest group surveyed (exact ages varied from country to country but were around 18-24) were almost always more likely, and on average across the seven countries twice as likely, to be portable. - only the older age group (varies by country, but around 55-65). As can be seen in Figure 28, people who are single are more likely to be mobile - alone than those who are married or living as married.
Although the differences between marital statuses were not statistically significant in all countries, single people were on average more than 40 percent more likely to be mobile only. As a result, those with wireless connections are regularly seeing speeds of 10 to 30 Mbps (in 2017, typical download speeds in the developed world were 16.6 Mbps, while 13 countries had speeds of at least 30 Mbps)266, and monthly data allowances are larger than in the past ; in 2014 the US average monthly consumption of wireless data was only 1.9 GB, with 1.2 GB per month typical in Canada.267.
The most obvious short-term consequence of the dominance of mobile access is for all businesses that do business with consumers over the Internet – which in 2018 will likely be almost every consumer business. Any application that includes large images or even medium quality videos may not be viable for customers using only mobile devices with low data limits. In these cases, e-commerce retailers or online financial services companies will want to consider low-bandwidth versions that can only reach a mobile audience.
But it seems impractical for media to stream large amounts of video, even at lower resolutions, to those in the mobile-only population facing low monthly limits. Some interesting challenges, given the fact that mobile-only use tends to favor lower-income and rural populations, are the public policy issues of telemedicine and education. Online student education and patient-physician conversations require significant bandwidth; the mobile-only population may be less able to access these services.
The US regulator is already considering making mobile-only internet qualified as mandated minimum coverage by operators274, although this is causing some debate.275. Perhaps the most important question comes not from just mobile in 2018, but from the choices for mobile data connections with mmWave technologies in 2019 and beyond.
