• Nature consists of a diversity of systems of both abiotic and biotic character interlinked with each other.

• Geodiversity provides fundamental elements for biodiversity in forming major ecosystem attributes.

• Bedrock geology and sediments contribute to nutrient and substrate conditions and terrain to drainage and moisture differences.

• But biodiversity also impacts geology, for example in formation of biogenetic sediments.

• Truly we are talking of nature diversity consisting of biodiversity and

geodiversity in a variety of blends.

(3)

This close scientific relationship should also be reflected in nature

conservation practices to the benefit of both geodiversity and biodiversity.

General Assembly of the

International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN)

2008 : “Conservation of geodiversity and geological heritage.”

• include geological heritage and geodiversity in the agenda of IUCN.

• to design, organize and host workshops, seminars and conferences on the conservation and management of geodiversity and geological heritage.

• It requests IUCN members and other partners to assist in this aim.

2012: CALLS on IUCN Members to ensure that, when reference is made in the IUCN Programme 2013-2016 to nature in general,

• preference be given to inclusive terms like nature, natural diversity or natural heritage,

• so that geodiversity and geoheritage are not excluded

• the definition of “biodiversity” incorporates explicitly the concepts and terms of

geodiversity and geoheritage, when dealing with or referring to all cases of natural diversity and/or natural heritage ;

A total of 2689 polygons (land- scape areas) were delineated using key varia- bles to show gradient

positions.

Each unique combination for all 10 gradients make up a basic type.

(380 basic types recorded in

Nordland.

These were grouped into 75 main groups for parctical use).

Co-operation between ProGEO and EuroGeoSurveys

ProGEO will contribute to EGS in developing:

• Guidelines to establish best practices in reg-istration and documentation of geosites

• Guidelines to assess geoheritage values in georesource development and geo

hazard

• mitigation

• Geoconservation and geodiversity dissemi-nation

EGS will:

• Propagate the importance of

geoconserva-tion in European policies

• Promotion of ProGEO's best practices on geoconservation

• Assist in database developments and geo-conservation outreach

• Request ProGEO assistance in geosite is-sues

EU-projects??

Call for integrating Society in Science and Innovation (H2020-ISSI-2014-1)

Topic: Pan-European public outreach: exhibitions and science cafés engaging citizens in science Deadline: September 2014

Main aims

- To develop a pan-European outreach initiative focused on geoheritage;

- To engage the public assuming good-practices towards nature conservation;

- To promote synergies in each country to promote geoconservation, involving

national/regional/local public authorities, teachers, relevant actors, and general public. It is expected that some of the proposed initiatives might continue in the future (hopefully as a snowball effect).

Potential partners

- Governmental agencies (Geological surveys; Conservation and environmental institutes) - Universities and secondary schools

- Science and Natural History Museums - NGOs

- Associations

- Private companies

- National IGCP Committees and National UNESCO Commissions - European Geoparks Network

plansammenheng eller

koble geologiske verdier sammen med økologiske verdier inn i en
