Positive betraktninger Forskning.
Noragric søkt og fikk tildelt det eksternt delfinansiert Thor Heyerdahl professorat (åremålstilling) i Health, Environment and Development. Det begynte høsten 2008.
Helse og utvikling aktivitetene ved UMBs institutter har økt på tvers av instituttene. Vi har søkt og fått forskningsmidler til nye prosjekter og med nye partnere. Vi har etablert en arena for stipendiater, post dok’er og forskere til å utveksle ideer og utvikle forskningssøknader. En nordisk gruppe også møtes med fokus på området ’vann og sanitær’.
Stipendiatene som har fulført sine studier har fått stillinger på universiter slik at vi kan fortsette vårt samarbeid med dem.
Undervisning.
Gruppen har etablerte et parellelt Mastersprogram i Pakistan, Nepal og Norge innenfor området ’Bærekraftig vann- og sanitær, helse og utvikling’. Dette er gjort selv om gruppen ikke var tildelt ressurser til dette. Vi har også fått ekstern finansiering til å inkludere våre samarbeidspartner i dette arbeidet (NOMA midler). Masterprogrammet har allerede begynt på COMSATS (Pakistan) og i Nepal og vil begynne både hos UMB høsten 2009.
Nye kurs innefor helse er etablert på flere institutter. Masterstudenter ser på helse som interessante og flere velger helse-relaterte emner til sin hovedoppgave.
Flere av mastertudentene har raskt fått seg relevante stillinger.
Utfordringene
Thor Heyerdahl professoratet har ikke løst behov for en professorstilling innenfor Helse, Miljø og Utvikling. Arild Vatn, som har fått stilling, skal hovedsakelig arbeide med
tverrfaglig metodikk rettet mot miljø og utvikling. Området har stort behov for et professorat som har et hovedfokus på helse.
Prof II engasjementene (3-5 årig engasjementet) er midlertidige stillinger. Dette er
problematisk da de er så sentralt til satsningen. Postdoc stillingene (2-3 årige) har vært og kommer til å være et viktig bidrag til forskning. Det er av stor betydning for helsesatsning at nye stillingene blir tilgjengile innenfor satsningsområdene.

Helse er fortsatt mer forankret med individer enn med institutter. Vi skal arbeide mot at helsesatsning er inkludert i strategiene til flere av instituttene.
Vi skal arbeide mot å bli annerkjent som en ’geografiske node’ innenfor vann og sanitær i Sørøst Asia. Dette er en del av SEI’s globale program. Vi må koble forskning til
utdanningsprogramet. Vi må også søke større forskningsprosjekter.
Fra 2012
Satsingen bør videreføres med økt fokus på utvalgte områder.
Skjevheter av fordeling av ressurser bør rettes opp.
Forskning og utdanning øker på tverrfaglig metodikk og metoder.
Helse kan bli et viktig samarbeidsområde med NVH.

Personell med særskilt finansiering
Thor Heyerdahl institutt og Noragric har finansiert en professor stilling i ’Helse, Miljø og Utvikling’. Prof. Arild Vatn begynte i denne stilling i september 2008 på Noragric. Hans arbeid vil fremme tverfaglig metodikk og metoder med hovedvekt på miljø og utvikling.

Kommunikasjon
Noragrics biblioteket har kjøpt ca. 250 bøker innenfor området ’helse og utvikling’ til støtte for hele programområdet. Dette er et nytt fagfelt for Noragric og har derfor krevd både investeringer i bøker og oppbygging av stabben.

Mastergradsprogrammer
Helse- og utviklingprogrammet var ikke tildelt midler fra Helse UMB til oppretting av et nytt Mastergradsprogram.
Masterprogrammet i ’Sustainable Water and Sanitation, Health and Development’ var tildelt planleggingsmidler fra NOMA. Programmet planlegges i samarbeid med Kathmandu University (Nepal) og COMSATS (Pakistan). Masters programmene i de tre land skal tilbys parallelt. Det begynte på COMSATS og i Nepal på høsten 2008. Sandra Umbach, Canadian Water and Saniation (CAWST) – a large Canadian NGO doing a substantial amount of work with water and sanitation in developing countries.
Ola Hanserud, Nowegian Chursh Aid AND Bioforsk. Following completion of his Masters, Hanserud worked first with water and sanitation projects in Pakistan with the Norwegian NGO, Norwegian Church Aid. He has since been hired by Bioforsk to work within the same field.
Razak Seidu successfully completed his Masters and received a PhD stipend at IMT.
A number of the Ethiopian students have returned to Hawassa and Mekelle and will be able to join in research and education on food safety issues around mycotoxins.
