Since 2004 UB has supported dental education in different ways

As an academic and research Librarian

(Ansvarlig for odontologifagene), I work with:

Developing good and effective library

services for especially dental education. By

arranging an exciting, modern, up to date

sustainable and competent information-

and resource-services.

(3)

Exciting and Competent Information Services by UB

1. Build up a Literature Collection

 Paper collection

 Electronic accessible resources. For example:

To support students/researchers when they are out of campus

Advantage to students during their practical periods out of campus for 2. semesters

The modern information technology is prioritised in this education (UB will put a special emphasis on this)

(4)

2. Teaching

 User education

guiding/advising students/researchers in different ways.

 Library information literacy

Give classes to make users competent in information finding, i.e. to know when they have need for information, what type of information is needed and how to find it.

Users must be able to evaluate and use the information in an effective way.

3. Developments for research/academic activities

Be part of the progress in dental education and research work, within the liability the library is responsible for.

Evidence based Information Searching

(by demand)

Evidence based Decision Making (EBDM) process provides a mechanism for staying current in practice by addressing gaps in knowledge so that the clinicians/students can provide the best care possible (Forest JL, 2014)

• “PICO worksheet and Search Strategy” process to provide skills for a strategic search e.g. in bibliographic databases (PubMed)

• A problem is solved by defining a question using the method PICO (the key to find evidence).

P = Population/Problem I = Interventions

C = Comparison

O = Outcome

Planning and outline of the course

Involvement of researchers from the institute is required

 What to include

 When to teach (appropriate time – relevant to students/clinicians)

 Improves network between library and institution

For instance:

This could be a course just before students go for clinical practices, they can get help for information search to help in evidence based decision making.

Other courses offered

Different courses for PhD and all researchers at the institute on request

 Electronic documents in the library

1 hr lecture with demonstration live on-line

In a way it also helps to market the e-resources the library offers

 Specific database course upon request: e.g. Medline and PubMed. Detailed search methods

2 hr theory/lecture and 1 to 2 hrs practice depending on students intellectual level

 EndNote/RefMan course upon request
