The capelin survey during the 2010 ecosystem investigations in

the Barents Sea

with a small taste from other parts of the investigations

Seminary on board G.O. Sars 6 October 2010

Harald Gjøsæter, IMR

(3)

The capelin survey - background

• Has long traditions, back to 1972

• Russia and Norway, 4-6 vessels

• Is, from 2003 part of the ecosystem survey

• The effort is reduced since the start of the series

• One of the few examples of an acoustic

survey, where the results are used directly as an absolute estimate of stock size

(4)

The capelin survey - history

• A dramatic history!

• But a very interesting history!

• Because capelin is one of the “pivot” or “key”

species in the Barents Sea ecosystem, its dynamics signals fundamental events in the Barents Sea

(5)

The capelin survey - results 2010

• “Impressions”

• Distribution

• Stock size

• Stock structure

(6)

A dramatic but interesting story

(7)

”Impressions”

• The further north – the more interesting

• The areas between Svalbard and Franz Josef Land are fascinating to visit and survey

• There are

– whales, – nice fish,

– big things on the echosounder,

– and every night there is a beautiful sunset!

(8)

Capelin distribution

Very large area!

Northern limit and main

concentrations far north

(9)

Stock size and structure

(10)

The rest of the survey

To tal co ve ra ge ,

Inc lud ing no rth er n K ar a S ea

(11)

Recruitment

• Capelin 0-group – a litle bit above average

(12)

Recruitment

• Cod 0-group – strong

(13)

Recruitment

• Haddock 0-group – strong

(14)

Other interesting things

2009 2010

Cod distribution in 2009 and 2010

(15)

Plankton production

Zooplankton biomass at a stable and relatively high level

(16)

Conclusions

• Its too early to draw any final

conclusions from this survey, but the impression so far is that:

The Barents Sea is in a healthy state, with high plankton production, large fish

stocks, and good recruitment to these

fish stocks

RELATERTE DOKUMENTER

„ Since 1972, the capelin stock in the Barents Sea has been surveyed by an annual acoustic survey in autumn.. „ The assessment of the

• The third international blue whiting spawning stock survey shows a clear increase in stock numbers and biomass (~20–36%), in comparison to the survey in 2005.. The estimates

As the survey produces abundance indices for the mature part of the cod stock these indices should be corrected with proportions mature before they are used in traditional

Abundance estimation To estimate the abundance of a fish stock over the entire survey region, it is necessary to integrate the line-transect measurements and

The results of a summer survey initiated in 1996 were investigated as a possible index of stock size to calibrate XSA. The survey showed relatively good internal consistency up to

The survey results include the distribution and the biomass estimate of spawning blue whiting in March-April west of the British Isles, and the distribution, migration and

The assessment is fitted using egg survey estimates of stock size which are treated as absolute measures of abundance, and age disaggregeted Western Approaches survey data, assumed

The vessel time this year allocated to the survey is difficult to compare to that last year, since the coverage of the capelin stock formed part of a multipurpose survey. The weather
