ABSTRACT

The foundation of my diploma thesis is an observation and realization of a big international

environmental problem; outside of our cities there are large areas affected by ugly, anonymous, and intimidating logistics buildings. These buildings do not appear to belong in the landscape they are situated in, but still, they are very much present. They are not built to be seen, yet they cannot be overlooked.

This is a situation I would like to address, and I would like to contribute to a solution.

In my Diploma works, I have studied how to improve the facades of warehouses and logistics buildings within the limitations of this typology. In my pursuit of better architecture, I have performed several investigations. I decided to single out a set of individual components that makes up the outward expression of a building, and then I studied these aspects separately and evaluated them based on relevant criteria.

These investigations accumulate in a proposal discussing what I have learned through the prosses. The project is based on a case study: an existing building (Hydroscand) outside of Oslo. I have designed an alternative building meeting the programmatic requirements of the company. In this I have utilized the possibilities and limitations within the current prevailing building regime for logistics buildings.

Through my work I have identified several practical and concrete solutions on how to improve the outward appearance of large warehouses and logistics buildings.
