A proposta inicial desse trabalho tinha como objetivo a comparação entre as formas nativa e recombinante da frutapina. No entanto, a forma nativa se apresentou de difícil acesso pelo baixíssimo rendimento e laborioso retrabalho em sucessivas cromatografias de afinidade a fim de remover toda a frutalina, a multilectina presente nas amostras. O que explica mais de 20 anos entre a primeira menção a essa lectina e este trabalho. Afortunadamente, houve sucesso na obtenção de um sistema de produção heteróloga da frutapina em E. coli, como pode ser observado pelos dados coletados.

Os cristais da lectina foram de excelente qualidade, alcançando padrões de difração com alta resolução (~1,6 Å), originando três depósitos de coordenadas moleculares no Protein Data Bank (PDB) tais como 5KRP, 5TQZ e 5M6O referentes a Apo-FTP e os complexos FTP–glucose e FTP–manose, respectivamente. Por meio destes, foi possível obter, também, dados de dinâmica molecular especulando a interação da lectina com glucose e manose em meio líquido. Os ensaios de hemaglutinação demonstraram um sistema efetivo na produção da frutapina em sua forma ativa, permitindo a aglutinação de hemácias e sua inibição por glucose e manose. Os ensaios in vitro preliminares no capítulo II, demonstraram baixa toxicidade da lectina à fibroblastos murinos, células estas com alto coeficiente de proliferação, o que se supõe uma alta viabilidade celular frente a outros tipos de célula.

Na sequência, frutapina demonstrou efeitos moduladores do sistema imune, pela interação com o receptor toll-like 4 e aumento da produção de IL-6 em fibroblastos de pele humana. Além de estimular a migração destas células em ensaios de cicatrização in vitro. Os efeitos na fisiologia das mesmas células demonstraram que frutapina pode estimular a proliferação destas células, o que combinada às propriedades acima, pode representar uma potencial biomolécula para tratamento de lesões cutâneas e feridas crônicas. Os dados aqui coletados fomentam futuras pesquisas a fim de investigar o potencial da frutapina como

molécula imunomoduladora ou imunoestimulante. Além de estudos que envolvam o desenvolvimento de formas farmacêuticas para aplicação tópica em cicatrização de lesões.

Cabe, ainda, em futuros estudos, a obtenção da forma recombinante da terceira e menos abundante lectina nas sementes de Artocarpus incisa: a frutaquina, lectina ligante à quitina. Isto, possivelmente, culminaria na coleta de dados estruturais desta última lectina, e assim, ajudaria a elucidar esse padrão incomum nas espécies do gênero Artocarpus, em que são produzidas três lectinas com reconhecimento distinto a carboidratos, na mesma parte da planta.
