A hipovitaminose D tem alta prevalência mundialmente, tendo sido também detectada na amostra geral do presente estudo e particularmente entre os asmáticos.
Considerandose os fatores de risco associados à asma e aqueles relacionados à deficiência de VD, assim como as evidências do papel prejudicial da hipovitaminose D nos pacientes asmáticos, é possível inferir que a suplementação rotineira dessa vitamina, em especial em algumas épocas do ano, como o inverno, assim como para grupos especiais, como os pacientes asmáticos, poderá ser benéfica para uma melhor qualidade de vida.
Os resultados encontrados fortalecem a ideia de que ensaios clínicos devem ser realizados para comprovar definitivamente relações de causalidade entre deficiência de VD e asma. Depois de estar bem estabelecida essa relação, será possível propor formas de suplementação da vitamina, com o intuito de diminuir a incidência de asma, reduzir o número de exacerbações e a gravidade das crises nos portadores dessa doença e melhorar a resposta ao tratamento já instituído.
