4.3 Numerical Simulation Steps

Tendo em conta as tendências do mercado de suplementos alimentares de origem vegetal para o controlo de peso e massa muscular, as perspetivas para o futuro são de crescimento e expansão.

Atualmente, a legislação em vigor deixa muitas questões em aberto. Estas lacunas permitem que certas plantas com propriedades farmacológicas possam ser comercializadas como medicamento ou como suplemento alimentar. Os conceitos de suplementos alimentares de origem vegetal, medicamentos à base de plantas e produtos- fronteira ainda não são claro para os consumidores, o que os pode levar a pensar que possuem todos o mesmo tipo de estudos sobre a sua eficácia e segurança.

O facto de não serem exigidos estudos de eficácia e segurança aos suplementos alimentares antes da sua comercialização pode implicar potenciais riscos para os consumidores. Existe a possibilidade acrescida de surgirem efeitos adversos e interações entre compostos ativos que não estejam descritos no rótulo ou que não se apresentem nas concentrações esperadas.

Os suplementos alimentares mais consumidos são as vitaminas e os minerais, mas os suplementos de origem vegetal representam também uma grande parte do consumo, principalmente quando o objetivo é o controlo do peso e da massa muscular.

Algumas plantas já têm vários estudos de eficácia comprovada mas revelam falta de segurança na sua utilização, como é o caso da efedra. No entanto, a maioria dos estudos que existem sobre estes suplementos apresentam informações contraditórias ou com pouca evidência. É necessário regulamentar e padronizar os procedimentos para os estudos efetuados a suplementos alimentares de origem vegetal, de maneira a que os resultados sejam mais uniformes e menos contraditórios. Estes estudos poderiam incidir particularmente em grupos populacionais vulneráveis, como indivíduos com patologias específicas, e assim conferir maior legitimidade às suas conclusões.
