Estas revisões indicam que o paradigma de pesquisa de "imagens genéticas" pode auxiliar na identificação de fenótipos intermediários e, portanto, pode fornecer informações mais consistentes sobre os mecanismos biológicos do TB e TDM. As variantes nos genes

CACNA1C, ANK3 e BDNF e 5-HTTLPR, BDNF e COMT forneceram os achados mais

consistentes até agora em associação com o TB e TDM respectivamente, aplicando paradigmas de neuroimagem aos genes candidatos emergentes de EAGA.

Os esforços futuros de pesquisa devem incluir amostras com diferentes categorias de diagnóstico, e o desenvolvimento de consórcios colaborativos com protocolos previamente publicados pode aumentar o impacto de esforços futuros. Contudo, descobertas altamente

116 robustas são improváveis se a única fonte de genes candidatos forem EAGA e polimorfismos genéticos, e estudos de neuroimagem são particularmente difíceis em pacientes com transtornos do humor devido à influência de regimes de medicação complexos.
