Abstract:
The report concerns environmental contaminants in biota at Statoil Petroleum Mongstad in 2015. The results are reported in relation to the historic development of investigated contaminants. The investigation concerns hydrocarbons (THC, PAH and NPD) and heavy metals in blue mussels (Mytilus edulis), perfluorinated compounds (PFC) in marine limpets (Patella vulgata), common crabs (Cancer pagurus) and sediment. Blue mussels, were collected from established cages and one natural population near the refinery. Limpets and sediment were collected near a fire- training site at the Mongstadvågen bay, where there was a spill of surface water from a drainage pool at the fire-training site in early 2015. Common crabs were taken from a seawater-inlet with water taken from Mongstadvika bay, and represent crabs that have resided in the area.A trend to falling concentrations of heavy metals in blue mussles is seen, and all blue mussel samples have environmental condition 1 or 2
(unpolluted to moderately polluted) in 2015. Zink and mercury have higher concentrations than, while lead has similar concentrations at the refinery and the reference station. THC was still highest at station 6R, although lower than in 2012. Pyrene and fluoranthene show reduced concentrations over the past decades, and the highest concentration in 2015 was at the reference station at the Krossøy island, far from the refinery. Sum PAH 16 at the refinery is also similar to the reference station. PFOS and several other PFCs were higher in limpets in March compared to previous
investigations. Highest levels were found near the drainage from the fire-training site. In July the levels had started to drop near the run-off.
Fluorotelomere sulfonate 8:2 was a dominant PFC in limpets in 2015, and was also found in samples from 2012. In common crabs PFC was lower in 2015 than in 2013, but the difference was not significant. Sediment was not found to be a suitable matrix for PFC analyses, and only PFOS was quantified in one sample near the fire-training site. The maximum PFOS- concentration in limpets at Mongstad (10.4 µg/kg ww) is significantly lower than previous reports of heavily contaminated sites (206 µg/kg ww). The levels of PFOS in limpets and crabs are well below the NOAEC in molluscs and the TDI for human consumers of crabs. Long chained PFC have increased in biota along the coast over the past years, after the replacement of PFOS with FTS in firefighting foam, and this trend is also seen at Mongstad.
