Norwegian Language and Culture for International Students
ECTS credits: 60
Academic level and organisation of the study programme
This is a 1-year programme resulting in 60 ECTS credits, and is built up of three courses.
It is only possible to take this programme on a full-time basis. Students submitting to a voluntary placement test before starting, and who can document that they already have the required basic Norwegian language skills, may be exempted from attendance and workload requirements for course 1.
Introduction
1-year programme in Norwegian for students of foreign background. The course is meant for students with beginner level Norwegian language skills, but is also open to students whose skills exceed this level. At the end of the programme, students should have sufficient Norwegian skills to follow studies taught in Norwegian.

has the language skills necessary to complete studies where the medium of instruction and course literature is in Norwegian

Target group
The programme is for:
International quota students, and international students in general
People of foreign background wanting to acquire Norwegian skills to qualify for admission to high education and/or the employment market
Career prospects and further studies
Completing and passing this programme will cover the Norwegian language requirements for admission to higher education.
General entry requirements
All international applicants must meet the minimum requirements for admission to higher education in Norway set by the Norwegian agency for Quality Assurance in Education (NOKUT general recognition) . That includes English proficiency.
English language requirements
All non-native English speakers must provide official documentation of English language proficiency at the level of Norwegian upper secondary school/high school. Please see

Among the NOIS-applicants meeting the academic requirements mentioned in the , the following applicants will have priority:
GSU-list
Priority 1 A) Applicants residing in Norway on the basis of residence permit spanning for a longer period than the duration of the NOIS program. Applicants staying on student visa will not come into this category.
B) EU/EEA citizens.
Priority 2 Applicants from countries exempted from entry-visa, and without academic education equivalent to a Master's degree in Norway, see GSU-list.
Priority 3 Applicants not holding an equivalent to a Master's degree in Norway, see , from these countries: Bahrain, Belize, Bolivia, Botswana, Ecuador, GSU-list

Priority 4 Applicants from countries not included above (1-3), and without academic education equivalent to a Master's degree in Norway, see GSU-list. This concerns NOIS-applicants only, and is due to restrictions from the UDI (The Norwegian Immigration Authorities). Applicants holding Master's degrees with
citizenships from outside the EU/EEA cannot expect their residence applications to be granted for NOIS and following studies, which is why they are not prioritized.
Teaching and working methods
Teaching takes the form of group instruction, lectures, student presentations, individual work and activities on the e-learning platform. This is an intensive programme, with major emphasis on the student’s own written and oral activity.
Assessment, examination and grading
Every course ends with a written and oral exam. As a rule, there is a lecture attendance requirement and approved workload requirement to qualify to sit for exams. The
description of each course provides more detailed information.
All partial exam components in a course must be passed in order to pass the course as a whole. Exams are graded using the letters A to F, where E is the lowest pass grade.
Internationalisation
Due to the composition dynamic of the student group, the programme has an international perspective. The programme recruits students of various cultural backgrounds.
Programme structure and content
The programme is offered at Campus Hamar and comprises 3 course components, each carrying 20 ECTS credits. The courses correspond with level 1, 2 and 3 of the university’s training programmes for foreign students.

3 written submissions - submitted digitally (each text is submitted twice) 80% attendance at lessons
Students submitting to a voluntary placement test before starting, and who can
document that they already have the required basic Norwegian language skills, may be exempted from the written submission and attendance requirements.
Examination
3-hour individual written exam counts for 60 percent of the grade.
15-minute oral exam in pairs counts for 40 percent of the grade. 30 minutes preparation time is given for the oral exam, which is in the form of a discussion between two candidates on a given topic
The exam is graded using the letters A to F, where E is the lowest pass grade. A total grade is given at the end and both exams must be passed to get a final grade in the subject.
