Sergey Sukhorukov graduated from Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology and known for Longyearbyen habitants as one from “Store Norske male choir” .
He came at UNIS as a first MIPT student at August 2006 for AT301, AT323; AT327 and continued at autumn 2008 with AT209 course.
Now he studies AT208 and investigates ice friction.
Sergey carries out a great deal of small scale laboratory tests, using this “magic” device – Knekkis (on the photo). He continues the experiment, which had been began by lastyear Master student at UNIS Marco Nanetti. The stickslip interaction between ice and rough steel surfaces has been detected in these experiments. This kind of icematerial interaction wasn't observed and described in the literature earlier.
For better understanding of such phenomenon Sergey modified experimental procedure, designed additional base and carried out few types of experiments with freshwater ice. Based on the results of the experiments he evaluated local pressure that arises between ice and steel hollow cylinder during their relative motion.
