A free discovery tool for open access publications and research data

As Open Science is gaining momentum, there is a need for powerful discovery tools that can harvest and present research literature and datasets in open access form -

free of charge.

Targeting the polar regions

Open Polar is a free to use discovery tool for open access publications and research data specifically

targeting the polar regions, across all subject areas, and irrespective of where the research originates from.

The user-friendly search service includes an option to search via geolocations on a map, and to perform

systematic searches.

Open Polar is developed by UiT The Arctic University of Norway in collaboration with The Norwegian Polar

Institute.

Open Science and research integrity

Integrating open access publications and datasets in the same search, speeds up the discovery processes, fosters the transparency of research, and minimizes duplication of fieldwork and experiments.

OPEN POLAR

– a global open access portal to research on the polar regions

Why did we need Open Polar?

Around 60 % of open-access polar records were unfindable through searchable platforms outside the institutional webpage (Abu-Alam, 2019)

This findability gap demonstrated the need to gather metadata of open-access records in a homogenous,

seamless database and making this database available to researchers, students and the public through one

searchable platform.

Fundamental philosophies

Accept the imperfect world

Duplicates of some datasets are better than missing precious datasets

Build competence

A small team with a mix of technical competence and scientific background is the core of the project

Consulting the researcher community

Built upon feedback from a reference board consisting of active researchers from a variety of research fields

Based on Open Source software and existing infrastructure

Vufind, Bielefeld academic search engine (BASE), API, XML files through collaboration partners

• It is important that Dataverse distinguishes between open data and data with access restrictions, so that harvesting services can harvest open data in the global open.
