2 Answer ONE of the essay questions (1000-1200 words). Your text should include an

introduction, a body and a conclusion. It is central that you make use of sources and reference your sources using MLA referencing style. It is expected that you discuss the literary works in context of their history and engage closely with texts and terms that you have studied this semester.

1. Discuss the relationship between man and society as presented in EITHER Benjamin Franklin’s autobiography OR Ralph Waldo Emerson’s essay “Self-Reliance.”

2. Discuss how the central symbol in “The Yellow Wallpaper” functions in relation to the plot and theme(s) of the story. You must also draw upon other relevant texts that you have studied this semester.

3. Compare and contrast Whitman’s “One’s Self I Sing” and Ginsberg’s “A Supermarket in California,” taking into account thematic aspects, historical context and formal features. You can also draw upon other relevant works that you have studied this semester. (e.g. Whitman’s “I hear America Singing.”)

4. “I, in my own mind, have thought of America as a place in the divine scheme of things that was set aside as a promised land.” (Ronald Reagan)

Put the quote into context and discuss the statement in light of “American

exceptionalism.” In your text you must draw upon aspects of American history and American literature that you have studied this semester.

5. Please see the texts (below) by Robert Frost and Sylvia Plath. Use the knowledge you have of the two authors to compare the two visions, place the texts in the American literary tradition and comment on how they use literary features to express themes.

Excerpt from Sylvia Plath, The Bell Jar (1966)

I saw my life branching out before me like the green fig-tree in the story.

From the tip of every branch, like a fat purple fig, a wonderful future beckoned and winked. One fig was a husband and a happy home and children, and another fig was a famous poet and another fig was a brilliant professor, and another fig was Ee Gee, the amazing editor, and another fig was Europe and Africa and South America, and another fig was Constantin and Socrates and Attila and a pack of other lovers with queer names and off-beat professions, and another fig was an Olympic lady crew champion, and beyond and above these figs were many more figs that I couldn’t quite make out.

I saw myself sitting in the crotch of this fig-tree, starving to death, just because I couldn’t make up my mind which of the figs I would choose. I wanted each and every one of them, but choosing one meant losing all the rest, and as I sat there, unable to decide, the figs began to wrinkle and go black, and, one by one, they plopped to the ground at my feet.

The Road Not Taken By Robert Frost (1916)

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far I could To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim Because it was grassy and wanted wear, Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same,

5 And both that morning equally lay

In leaves no step had trodden black Oh, I marked the first for another day!

Yet knowing how way leads on to way I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence;

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I, I took the road less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.
