rods: pipes that are extended to the sampling tube and inner rods that are connected to the piston. This provide very precise control of the sampling depth etc. The individual core sections are 2m Iong with diameters of 11 cm, or altematively 6 cm (Svendsen er a l . , 1 9 8 7 : 1 9 8 9 \ .
The cores were first x-rayed and then split lengthwise for struc_
tural and sedimentological studies. The carbonate and organic car_
bon content (TOC) were determined with an EC 12 Leco carbon analyzer. The coal content was counted with a binocular micro_
scope with magnification 40X. All cores were photographed.

Criteria in the sediment record for identifuing glacial variations
The following lithological and sedimentological characteristics are attributed to the glacial activity in the catchment area: the coal content, the lamination and sedimentation rate. A discussion of each of these parameters is given below.
Coal content
Linn6breen is underlain by coal-bearing sandstones (Figure 7) (Hjelle et al., 1986), and the present meltwater stream carries sedi- ments characterized by high coal and low carbonate content. In
contrast, the inflow streams from the eastern valley side erode
carbonate rocks, and carry no coal. Thus, when the glacial source
is dominant the sediments entering the lake are enriched with coal
particules whereas during periods with less glacial activity the
sediments are enriched with detrital carbonate. Both the carbonate
and TOC (coal) contents of the surface sediments are roughly
similar to the values measured in the river sediments along Lin-
n6elva. This indicates that presently most of the sediment supply
is from Linn6breen. We conclude that downcore variations in the
content of coal, measured as TOC, basically monitor glacial fluc-
tuations throueh time. The low coal and hieh carbonate values in
