Greetings from the Director

In response to the health challenges of a global world and in line with calls for more efficient knowledge production towards the Sustainable Development Agenda 2030, the scale of Global Health research has grown both in Norway and worldwide.

The idea that researchers from different fields should work in collaboration has reconfigured health research, with the view that Global Health research plays a significant role in addressing disparities in Global Health. The Faculty of Medicine (MedFac) at the University of Oslo (UiO) aims to be at the forefront of this movement, striving to address the Global Health challenges of today.

The Centre for Global Health (CGH) is an initiative of MedFac, hosted by the Institute of Health and Society (HELSAM). The focus of CGH is to support and link the existing knowledge base of Global Health research at MedFac to relevant networks, human and financial resources, while further strengthening Global Health research capacity within the university. Another key function of CGH is to disseminate information to the wider community of researchers, decision makers and the public, while enhancing the Global Health profile of MedFac through high quality events, communication and reporting. In addition, active participation of CGH in national Global Health forums and international networks further supports and develops the role of MedFac in these organisations, both in terms of research collaboration and promoting access to novel and innovative funding sources.

Thus, CGH is committed to advance Global Health through a) offering integrative contribution to research activities by supporting researchers directly; b) fostering education by teaching, supporting and supervising post-graduate students; and, c) investing in administration of and assistance with events, proposals and projects, all related to Global Health.

My team and I strive to maintain a stimulating platform for dialogue and action to address Global Health challenges. We are grateful for the support from MedFac, HELSAM, CGH Steering Committee, the Technical Advisory Board and UiO rectorate, as well as our partners and networks. We are looking forward to a busy and fruitful 2019.

Prof. Andrea S. Winkler

Research activities

Developing and strengthening collaboration and communication between researchers at the university is a strategic activity for improving research efficiency and outcomes. In order to facilitate networking and communication between research groups with common interests, CGH has consolidated existing Global Health research at UiO into virtual Signatory Themes.

The themes are designed to represent current research and adapt to the changing environment and priorities within Global Health. They provide access to information on who is active in Global Health at UiO and function as a portal for Global Health projects and events for internal and external users.

Consolidation

After initial two years of establishing a comprehensive Global Health platform at MedFac/UiO, CGH in 2018 developed a consolidation plan for the next 5 years. Within this plan, CGH have a specific focus on capacity development in Global Health research and education at MedFac/UiO by:

1. Supporting innovative and upcoming research groups that have more of a national focus and are in an early phase but have the potential for excellence, high impact and long-term sustainability.

2. Ensuring long-term sustainability of already successful Global Health research groups.

The Norwegian Global Health landscape has a longstanding commitment to global maternal & child health and infectious diseases. As a consequence, we have a well-established sexual & reproductive health as well as an infectious diseases hub with a strong support base at MedFac. CGH commits to offering mentorship, strategic advice, travel support, event organizing and institutional backing to selected groups.

Relight: A new support program for Global Health research groups at MedFac, named Research ExceLlence and Innovation in Global HealTh (RELIGHT) with a focus on Global One Health, Global Digital Health and Global Antimicrobial Resistance was launched in the fall of 2018 for start-up in 2019.

The support for these upcoming, young research groups will include a strong level of involvement in terms of mentoring, with a focus on grant writing. The program aims to foster a stronger global health focus on those nationally already strong groups, link people and groups into relevant research environments that can compete for the larger funding schemes.

Education

Nested within an academic environment, CGH is committed to developing and expanding Global Health education.

A week-long Global Health course for PhD candidates of MedFac was organised by Heidi Fjeld and Andrea Winkler in the spring of 2018, with several of the CGH network members as teachers. In addition, lectures on Global Health have been included in the introductory course of the PhD programme at MedFac and the Masters programme of International Community Health at HELSAM.

In order to increase engagement of students and staff interested and working on Global Health related projects, the PhD seminar for Oslo-based Global Health PhD candidates led by Johanne Sundby is meeting regularly- the Global Health Student Network. It offers candidates a platform to present their work, receive critical feedback, and discuss research administration, such as registration and ethics. It also offers opportunities to become engaged in other projects at the university, receive advice from experienced academics while creating a supportive environment of Global Health researchers.

The article series on Global Health in collaboration with CGH, the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad) and the Journal of the Norwegian Medical Association

22 articles have been published in the Journal of the Norwegian Medical Association from 26 June 2017 until 2 January 2018, profiling Global Health research in topics including infectious diseases, neglected tropical diseases, mother and child health, nutrition, health and the environment, health inequalities, migrant health, universal health coverage, health service delivery, health personnel training, health in conflict, Global Health financing and student involvement in Global Health.

A selection of articles was published in a special edition as hard copy early 2018.

The Norwegian Research School of Global Health

CGH actively engages with the Norwegian Research School of Global Health (NRSGH; with Johanne Sundby as one of the board members) and participated in the PhD conference organised in April 2018 in Oslo. The NRSGH aims to strengthen the quality of post-graduate education and facilitate recruitment of young researchers in Global Health. Current partners of the NRSGH include the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), the University of Tromsø, the University of Bergen, the Norwegian Institute of Public Health and UiO. The research school also supports other PhD activities, and helps to finance PhD students to attend courses, national and international conferences.

Centre for Global Health UiO annual report 2018 The NORPART EXCEL SMART project

The NORPART EXCEL SMART project is a strategic academic collaboration between Jimma University, Ethiopia (JU) and UiO, funded by the Norwegian Centre for International Cooperation in Education (SIU). The project is nested within CGH. The overall aim of the EXCEL SMART project is to enhance the quality of higher education in Ethiopia, and to expand and strengthen the academic cooperation between JU and UiO through student and academic staff exchange.

In 2018, the EXCEL SMART project group and the leadership staff at JU and UiO worked closely to plan, set up and prepare the educational and academic activities in the program. EXCEL SMART assisted four PhD and two MPhil candidates in preparing their applications to UiO study programs, and granted four mobility scholarships to medical and Master students travelling to JU. They hosted one PhD candidate from JU in August who will work with Profs. Kristin Heggen and Eivind Engebretsen, UiO, on his PhD studies.

EXCEL SMART also had the pleasure of hosting Dr. Legese Chelkeba, Dean of the Health Sciences Institute, JU and Gudina

Terefe Tucho from Department of Environmental health science and Technology, JU at the 2nd Annual Jimma seminar at Tøyen Hovedgård.

The seminar had speakers from JU and UiO presenting the plans for the new One-PhD programme at JU, as well as research portfolios and course work implemented at JU in collaboration with Norwegian Programme for Capacity Building in Higher Education and Research for Development (NORHED):

Strategic And Collaborative Capacity Development in Ethiopia and Africa (SACCADE).

The EXCEL SMART project is finalizing a MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) in How to Write a PhD Proposal led by Prof. Anne Moen. The MedFac granted additional funding to the development of the MOOC in 2018. It is developed in collaboration with colleagues from LINK – Centre for Learning, Innovation & Academic Development and UniMedia, and includes lectures with academic staff from JU and UiO. The MOOC will be launched in the beginning of 2019 on the FutureLearn platform where it will be available to forthcoming PhD students worldwide.

Communication

Communication is at the core of CGH. The focus for the communication activities in 2018 has been on reaching a broad audience of students, researchers and clinicians in Global Health via social media, webpages and organised events. We also actively outreach to potential funding mechanisms and the policy community. As part of the communication strategy and to ensure a professional and updated interface internally and externally, CGH is continuously enhancing and updating the UiO website and Facebook pages with reports and activities to serve the faculty, staff, students, alumni, partners and affiliates of CGH.

CGH organizes a range of seminars and conferences, some in collaboration with partners and individual researchers. Through our network activities, we strive to create meeting places for the Global Health community at large, enabling researchers and global health professionals to engage in dialogue, learn about new developments and link to policy makers.

Global Health Unpacked Series

The Global Health Unpacked Series with the Centre for Development and the Environment (SUM) offers a meeting place that has been welcomed by the Global Health researchers at UiO. The aim is to bring together the Global Health community on a regular basis to critically discuss key debates in Global Health through informal seminars. Guest speakers (both from the UiO and from other universities) bring an original perspective to their topic and engage in a conversation with the audience. Through this forum, CGH facilitates exchanges between Global Health researchers and students present in Oslo, beneficial for fostering interdisciplinary research.
